History
The MacMurray Foundation Inc. was founded by the late James A. MacMurray, LLD, CM in 1987 for the purpose of donating funds, in modest amounts to a variety of charitable organizations in New Brunswick and Canada. Today his family carries on his desire to give back to the community, to whom he gave so generously of his time and funds to support many worthwhile projects.
Mr. MacMurray had a long and distinguished business career, acting as chairman and/or president of a number of New Brunswick companies including Eastern Securities Company Limited, Maritime Beverages Ltd. and Fundy Cable Ltd. He served as a director of the Bank of Canada for a number of years as well other Maritime based companies.
Mr. MacMurray was an active volunteer in his home of Saint John as well and an avid fundraiser. Mr. MacMurray acted as chair or co-chair of fund raising campaigns for the YMCA, the 1985 Jeux Canada Games, and the United Way of Greater Saint John to name a few. Additionally, he served on various volunteer boards as a director; the Jeux Canada Games Foundation, Loch Lomond Villa Foundation and Mount Allison University.
Mr. MacMurray was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1998. He received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Mount Allison University and the University of New Brunswick. Mr. MacMurray was the first recipient of the Red Triangle Award presented by the Saint John YMCA and he was also appointed a member of the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame.
Today, Mr. MacMurray’s family continues the Foundation’s activities using his philosophy as a guide. Ann MacMurray Cox (President) and Ronald Cox of Bloomfield, NB and Barbara Golding (Vice President) and Peter Golding, Toronto, ON act as directors of the Foundation. Joan Chenier administers the day to day business of the Foundation and acts as Recording Secretary.
